vintage style

In the past, I’ve always been put off by shopping in a vintage store. ‘Vintage’ always meant USED to me. I was completely creeped out by the idea that someone, whom I didn’t know, had worn the clothing. Now, I’m officially flirting with the idea of vintage clothing. The older I get, the more I appreciate garments constructed in the 40’s and 50’s. I’m Suddenly intrigued by the fashions of the past; the quality and the structure. I like the overall feel of the look, and the impression it gives off. I decided to shop it out online, and see what I came up with. I’ve put together a daytime look, and an evening look with mostly vintage pieces. What do you think? What’s your take on ‘vintage’? Do you embrace it? Or does it “creep” you out?

I have loved vintage since my days of playing dress-up in my mom's and granmothers' old clothes. Even our Barbies had vintage clothes handed down from my aunt!

My favorite thing about vintage these days is the originality. With the advent of internet shopping, it is so much more difficult to find special pieces that no one else has. I especially love vintage costume jewelry and purses- low skeeve factor and always one of a kind! I have a lot of vintage coats, too which I get to wear once a year because I live in Texas - :( so sad.)

This is a great post on a shopping style that has so many benefits for so many - whether the benefits be price, style, ecology, or creativity! Love it.

And I need those purple shoes. Love.
    • I LOVE vintage clothing! There is so much great stuff that you can only get in vintage stores- also, if you find something vintage in a thrift store it usually ends up being cheaper, which I am a big fan of. I especially love vintage accessories- I have a lot of rings and necklaces from my grandmothers, etc. They are so beautiful and make me think of what happened in their lives when they wore them. It doesn't really creep me out that someone used to wear these things- it's something that I like about vintage clothes, sometimes! Haha.

I love these outfits- especially the capelet in the evening one! Awww.
    • It's true, there's a lovely history there - especially when it's a relative. I wish my mom had saved some of her pieces - I would love to have them now!

      Hi..just came across your post!

Up until about 2 years ago I would never have worn vintage and as you said -seen it as 'used' clothing - however I then moved to London for some time were all the best dressed people it seemed wore vintage.

Now I can't live without my treasured 'finds' and yes it is more taxing to shop for vintage than 'normal' everyday clothing..but I've grown to love 'the hunt'

I've sinced moved to Belfast in Northern Ireland and as I'm working full time
online shopping has been my savior in terms of getting my vintage fix.

I recently bought a beautiful reconstructed vintage 1960s dress from a site
called http://www.perkupvintage.com they have a 'revamped' vintage range as well as a whole vintage collection.

I paid 65.00 Euros for a bespoke one off dress that could easily have cost 10+ times that with a 'label' and draws attention & compliments everytime I wear it

Warning! Once you start wearing vintage it's very hard to wear 'high street' or even designer pieces again as they all seem so ordinary that and of course the fact several thousand people will own the same piece.

With vintage you not only get quaility crafted clothing but exclustivity.

I'm hooked and will remain so!

Good luck..break out there and start collecting!

      Antonia
    • That's what I'm finding - that 'high street' clothing just isn't that special. Times are tough for everyone right now, and we want to spend money on things that are well crafted and well priced. Thanks for visiting!

I love, love, love these looks! Vintage fashion is so hot right now. Many of the designers are bringing back the 40’s and 50’s looks. I just bought this fabulous Christian Dior New Look inspired dress by BCBG. I actually found it at this site called iStorez it was originally $295 marked down to $49!! You should check out this site it has the latest sales from all of the major retailers.

    • Thanks so much or the info! I love to find great sale pieces.
    • I have to admit that vintage creeps me out a little bit. But mostly, I've always felt that the only vintage clothes I thought were cute enough to buy were a bit to dressy for my style.

Something has changed in the past few year, however, and I find myself reaching for more "grownup" pieces. That, and the fact that quality seems to have declined dramatically for clothing in the past 10 years, make vintage more appealing.

Plus who can resist these gorgeous outfits you put together? The evening one is particularly lovely!
    • You hit the nail on the head! The quality of clothing has declined & that is exactly why I feel more attracted to vintage pieces. Great minds think alike! It seems people used to care more when crafting a piece of clothing. Now... it's so massed produced & it loses a lot.
    • Welcome to the world of vintage! I understand how it can creep out some folks...but when shopping online, just make sure the items have been cleaned and there is a good return policy :-) Happy shopping!
    • I love this post! I want both outfits!
    • I'm glad you like! There's a lot more hunting involved with vintage shopping - it can take awhile to find what you like. Enjoy!
