how to embody Jackie O’s classic american style

classic American style

When I think of Jackie O, I immediately think of her style and elegance. It’s actually a shame, because there was much more to Jackie O than that. Although, I think she projected the many facets of her personalty through fashion. She used fashion as a tool to make her own style, she took risks, and made statements. That is what Style Icons are made of.

my favorite style

One of my favorite ‘Jackie O’ looks is her Classic American style. The type of outfit she would wear in Martha’s Vineyard while spending time with her children. Easy going, comfortable, beachy, yet perfectly pulled together. A casual pair of Chino’s, a round neck tee, a pair of Jack Rogers, and her signature sunglasses. It seems simple – right? So why do so many people get it wrong? I think it’s because they don’t keep it as simple and classic as she did. Stick to classic colors like Navy, white, tan, and red. The chinos should fit properly.

not too tight

They shouldn’t be too tight or too slouchy. They should be pressed, but not starched. The tee should be fitted, not super tight or baggy.

It should be a solid color. Leave the ultra designer bag at home, grab a canvas boat bag instead. Jewelry should be simple.

A pair of diamond studs (real or fake), and a gold bracelet. The outfit becomes less about the pieces, and more about how you wear it, work it, walk it.

  • Jackie O is definitely one of my style icons, as is Priness Diana. The Jack Rogers sandals are my favorite part of the look you've assembled -- they are the most comfortable shoes I have ever owned!
  • Agree! I love the classic feel of the Jack Roger sandal. You are dead on about Jackie O & Princess Di - Love them both! It's so hard to find women these days with such elegance.
  • Jackie O ...Need not say anything else! Wow to look like that..heading to the gap, pant length is going to be tough for me, vertically challenged:) Good think for my tailor! she loves me.
  • Great to find you. Love the chinos and the bag...must get that bag. LOVE Jackie O - Great job, so fresh!
  • Thanks! She certainly was elegant wasn't she?!
  • Some sunglasses jeopardize the style of your outfit, but this one really looks great with it.. its really cool and fashionable..
  • Love her classic look. With the right shoe, this look would work on a Casual Friday at the office during the summer.
  • Absolutely works for casual Friday during the summer. You're going right to the Hamptons after work in this look.
  • Jenava Sexton
Those sandals are lovely, and I agree about the canvas bag. Being appropriate is so much more classy, which I think is something Jackie O. nailed. I also noticed the length of her pants in the photo; cropped right above the anklebone (any longer and they would look like high-waters!). Methinks this length is something I could do, as opposed to a "capri" length that might hit mid-calf and shorten the line of my leg.
  • You've got it - on the length! They are perfectly placed. Capri is a nightmare length for most women! Thanks for stopping by!
  • Jackie O is the classic fashion icon. What a classy lady--you think style & elegance, but you are right she is a lot more than that. Great post!
  • You did a great job putting this look together! I strive to look like her when I get dressed in the morning. I'm definitely heading to GAP to check out those chinos...
  • I just bought a pair the other day. I opted to get them more relaxed b/c the smaller size was hugging the booty too much :)
